USN-8875-2: aggiornare il kernel linux-nvidia su Ubuntu 22.04 LTS

Ubuntu published security advisory USN-8875-2 on 9 October 2026, addressing the linux-nvidia package—the kernel used by systems with NVIDIA GPUs on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS. For those managing GPU nodes in production—training, inference, rendering—this is an update to schedule with a reboot, not to defer to the next maintenance cycle.

What's changing

According to the official advisory, several security issues have been corrected in the Linux kernel, affecting the linux-nvidia package—Linux kernel for NVIDIA systems.

Among the individually listed flaws is a vulnerability in the i.MX clock driver: the driver did not correctly handle certain failure conditions during memory allocation, leading to a null pointer dereference; a local attacker could exploit this to cause a denial of service (system crash), tracked as CVE-2022-3114.

The remainder of the advisory groups a very large number of fixes affecting dozens of kernel subsystems—from block I/O to cryptography, from networking to the BTRFS, XFS, NFS file systems, plus Bluetooth, USB, KVM and io_uring. Ubuntu summarises the impact by stating that an attacker could exploit these to compromise the system.

Affected versions and procedure

For Ubuntu 22.04 LTS (jammy) you need to update to the following packages:

Package Version
linux-image-5.15.0-1112-nvidia 5.15.0-1112.113
linux-image-5.15.0-1112-nvidia-lowlatency 5.15.0-1112.113
linux-image-nvidia 5.15.0.1112.112
linux-image-nvidia-5.15 5.15.0.1112.112
linux-image-nvidia-lowlatency 5.15.0.1112.112
linux-image-nvidia-lowlatency-5.15 5.15.0.1112.112

The advisory reminds of a point often overlooked: after a standard system update, you must reboot your computer for all necessary changes to take effect. There is an additional warning for those using third-party kernel modules: due to an inevitable ABI change, kernel updates have received a new version number, which requires recompiling and reinstalling any third-party kernel modules installed, unless standard metapackages are already managed by automatic upgrade.

Anyone running proprietary NVIDIA drivers outside the standard repository, or custom modules for storage or networking, must account for this step before the reboot, not after.
