Control panel or command line? Five questions before you choose

Before buying a cPanel or Plesk licence, it's worth answering five questions: how many sites, how much RAM is left free, who handles maintenance.

Pannello di controllo o riga di comando? Cinque domande prima di scegliere

Anyone setting up their first server shouldn't be choosing between cPanel and Plesk. They should first decide whether they need a paid control panel, a free one, or none at all. This question comes before any feature comparison, and the answer affects your monthly bill more than any discount ever will.

1. How many sites do you need to manage today, not in a year's time

A paid control panel is charged per account or per server, not per site. On cPanel's official pricing, the Solo licence covers one account on cloud or VPS at $29.99 per month, whilst the Premier licence runs to $69.99 per month for one hundred accounts, with $0.49 for each additional account beyond one hundred, as shown on cPanel's official pricing page. Plesk, on the other hand, licences per server: on the official price list, Web Admin Edition (10 domains) costs €6.60 per month, Web Pro Edition (30 domains) €9.90 per month, Web Host Edition (unlimited domains) €16.50 per month. If you're managing two or three of your own sites, a paid control panel often costs more than the VPS hosting it.

2. How much RAM is left free after the control panel

The control panel isn't free in terms of resources. According to cPanel's official documentation, the minimum hardware requirements on AlmaLinux 8/9/10 are 2 GB of RAM (4 GB recommended) and 20 GB of disc space (40 GB recommended), with at least 3 GB if you install the ClamAV antivirus included with the panel. On a 2 GB VPS, cPanel alone consumes the minimum threshold: very little remains for the actual website. On a machine with less than 2 GB of RAM, a commercial control panel is not installable according to the manufacturer's specifications.

3. You already know how to use the command line, or you avoid it

Managing a server without a control panel means manually configuring Nginx or Apache, PHP-FPM, the database, certificates with Certbot, backups with cron. It makes sense if you manage a few identical servers, if you automate with scripts or provisioning tools (Ansible, Terraform), or if your stack doesn't fit well within the account/domain scheme of control panels (microservices, containers, separate Node.js applications from the website). It doesn't make sense if you touch the server once every six months and forget the commands in between: there, a configuration error costs more hours than you'd save on the licence.

4. Who else needs access to the control panel

If you're the only one using the server, the command line might suffice. If you need to give access to a client, a non-sysadmin colleague, or a reseller who creates their own accounts, a control panel with a graphical interface and separate user permissions keeps you from becoming the help desk for every minor request (creating an email, resetting an FTP password).

5. Have you already chosen managed hosting

Many providers sell "managed" hosting with no control panel exposed to the customer: the control panel, if there is one, is used only by the provider's staff. In that case the cPanel-or-Plesk question doesn't even arise: the cost of the licence is already in the fee, and whoever pays for those servers each month doesn't need to install or maintain anything.

Decision table

Situation Recommended option Indicative monthly cost
1-3 personal sites, you know the CLI No control panel €0 licence
Agency with few clients, few domains Plesk Web Admin or Web Pro €6.60-9.90/server
Reseller with many cPanel-style accounts cPanel Admin/Pro $35.99-53.99/month
Hosting provider with hundreds of accounts cPanel Premier or Plesk Web Host from $69.99/month or €16.50/month
Managed hosting, no panel access No choice to make included in the fee

Before signing an annual licence, it's also worth looking at free control panels (CyberPanel, HestiaCP and similar), already compared on these pages: they cost zero in licence fees but you remain responsible for updates and support.
